At the Colombo Medical School Alumni Association Australia (CoMSAA), our mission is to unite graduates of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo by fostering meaningful connections, encouraging lifelong learning, and strengthening our professional and social community.

Our Heritage
A Legacy of Medical Excellence Since 1870
The story of CoMSAA begins with the rich history of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, one of South Asia’s oldest and most respected medical institutions.
Established on 1 June 1870 as the Ceylon Medical School, the institution was founded to address the growing need for locally trained doctors. Under the leadership of Dr James Loos, the first cohort of just 25 students began a journey that would shape healthcare across Sri Lanka and beyond.
From Medical School to World-Class Faculty
Throughout the twentieth century, the institution evolved into the Ceylon Medical College, before becoming the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ceylon in 1942 with full degree-awarding status. The introduction of the MBBS programme expanded teaching facilities and internationally recognised academic standards established Colombo as a leader in medical education throughout the region.
Advancing Healthcare Through Education
Following Sri Lanka’s independence, the Faculty became a centre of excellence in medical education, clinical research and public health. New disciplines including community medicine, pharmacology, microbiology and psychiatry broadened its impact, while generations of graduates contributed to improving healthcare both nationally and internationally.
A Global Alumni Community
Today, the Faculty continues to educate medical professionals who serve communities around the world. Alumni associations such as CoMSAA Australia play an important role in preserving these lifelong connections by supporting graduates, strengthening relationships with the Faculty and investing in future generations of students.
Honouring Tradition While Looking Forward
For more than 150 years, the Faculty has combined academic excellence with compassion, integrity and service. Historic landmarks such as the iconic Anatomy Theatre and enduring traditions including the White Coat Ceremony reflect a heritage that continues to inspire graduates today.
